1: Brief History of The Coast Golf & Recreation Club

The Coast Golf & Recreation Club was officially opened in May 1965 by Sir John Marks, Chairman of the Board of The Prince Henry Hospital. Originally known as "The Coast" Hospital, The Prince Henry Hospital was established as a quarantine facility at the end of the 19th Century.

Sir Harold Dickinson was CEO of The Prince Henry Hospital from 1960-1963, during this period it was decided by the then Board to resurrect the golf course. Once utilised as a hospital staff amenity, the golf course had fallen on hard times. The resurrection of the golf course ensured the protection and preservation of the coastline and the foreshores of Little Bay as open space for use by future generations.

Staff members from Prince Henry Hospital, Prince of Wales Hospitals and the University of New South Wales were invited to become foundation members of The Coast Golf & Recreation Club. The old hospital laundry building was then designated to become the licensed premises for the The Coast Golf Club.

In more recent times the Club has undertaken some major renovations; New Pro Shop, New Cart Storage Facility and Air-Conditioning of the Clubhouse. Today, the course is undergoing a continual improvement program with renovations, redesign and upgrade to various aspects of the course layout.

11: Golf Etiquette

All juniors who participate in clinics and competitions at The Coast Golf Club should read and understand the rules and etiquette of golf. The following guidelines allow all participants to have fun. Consideration should be shown to others and the course at all times.

Safety

  • Ensure that no one is standing close or in a position to be hit with a club or ball when you make a swing.
  • Do not play a shot until the players in front are out of your range.
  • If a player hits a ball in the direction of other players and there is danger of it hitting someone, a warning should be shouted immediately. The traditional word of warning is "FORE".
  • When Greens Staff are nearby or ahead always alert them prior to playing your shot to ensure safe play.
  • Remember; "Green Staff always have the right of way"

Consideration for other players

  • Do not disturb other players by moving, talking or making unnecessary noise.
  • Make sure all electronic devices (mobile phones, walkmans, etc) will not distract other players. Turn them off or on silent.
  • On the teeing ground don't tee your ball until it is your turn to play.
  • Do not stand too close to or directly behind the ball or hole when a player is about to play.
  • On the putting green do not stand on another person's line of putt, or when they are making a stroke, or cast a shadow over their line of putt.
  • Remain close to or on the putting green until such time as all players in your group have holed out.
  • In stroke play, a player who is acting as a marker should, if necessary, on the way to the next tee, check the score with the player concerned and record it.

Pace of Play;

Players should play at all times without delay.

  • Keep up with the group in front.
  • If your group falls a hole behind and is holding up the group behind, you should invite the group behind to play through, irrespective of the number of players in that group.
  • You should be ready to play as soon as it is your turn. When playing on or near the putting green, leave your bag/buggy in a position between the green and the next tee. This will enable a quick exit to the next hole.
  • If you believe your ball may be lost outside of a water hazard or is out of bounds, you should play a provisional ball to save time.
  • If searching for a ball difficult to find, signal to the group behind to play through. Do not continue to play until the group you have called through have passed and are out of range.

Care of the Course;

  • Before leaving a bunker, carefully fill up and smooth over all holes and footprints made with a rake.
  • Carefully repair any divot holes you have created and/or damage to the putting green caused by the impact of the ball (yours or others).
  • Avoid causing any damage to the course by removing divots when taking practice swings or by hitting the head of a club into the ground, whether in anger or other reason.
  • Ensure no damage is done to the putting green surface when placing down flagsticks or bags.
  • To avoid damaging the actual hole; do not stand too close to the hole and take care during the handling of the flagstick and ball in and out of the hole.
  • Players should not lean on their clubs when on the putting green surface nor use a club when removing a ball from the hole.
  • Before leaving the green, the flagstick should be properly replaced in the hole.

Penalties for Breach;

  • If a player continues to disregard the guidelines set above they will be suspended from use of club facilities for an appropriate period.
  • A serious breach of etiquette may cause the player to be disqualified from an event, competition, or clinic.
