Bronze 1 Pennants – Final Round

Final Round vs Oak Point @ Kareela

The final round for our B1 ladies, back to the Shire they went to play at Kareela against Oak Point. The pressure was on from the start with the girls at the top of the table, with the win all dependent on the result the Beverley Park team had on the final day.

Position 1 this week was Cathy (firecracker) Balafoutis. Cathy has been playing like a machine of late and had to forego the ladies comp the day before in fear of not being able to play due to her winning streak putting her progressive handicap at risk of not being able to play today. Once again, Cathy was on fire coming in at 4 up after the front 9. Her opponent started to make a comeback on the back 9 but Cathy kept her composure coming in with the win on the 18th 2 up.

Position 2 was Judy (Presidento) Barrett. Judy held her own on this match, never letting her opponent get more than one shot ahead. A steaming hot day made it a tough battle but unfortunately this match went the wrong way for our Judy, going down 2&1.

Position 3 was Lorna Foley. Always a tough competitor is our Lorna, she wasn’t giving up without a fight. Not enough wildlife to keep her focused, the Kookaburra’s proving unhelpful, Lorna ended up going down 3&2.

Cathy McDonald was on a mission today. The heat was hot and Cathy was fully fired up ready to bring home the win. She went off to a good start but unfortunately, no Gary speak was able to bring her over the line today, going down 3&1. After seeing how Cathy was after this loss, I pity any person who crosses in her paths in any comp in the future. Phew.

Our number 5 today was a…… Marisa. Marissa new she was in for a tough battle when she came across her Kogorah pal in this match. No amount of “talk” to that ball was working for the lovely Marisa today with her going down against a very tough opponent 4&3.

Final result – Oak Point 4 – The Coast 1.

This result meant a potential countback against Beverley Park should they have a win. And they did…. 4-1 against Wooloware. This meant a countback and since BP won 4-1, it meant a win to them on countback by 1.5 games. Such a shame to see the girls not come home with the trophy after their amazing season. The B1 team hasn’t ever come so close to the win so they should all be so proud of their achievement. They did so well and, to me and most, are still winners. I’ve no doubt they’ll come back next year with more grit and determination. A great season and still winners!

Round 6 vs Cronulla @ Woolooware

The second to last round had the girls off to the Shire to play at Woolooware against Cronulla. Always a tough match with a lot of the Wooloware and Cronulla players playing regularly at both courses. A lovely sunny day in the Shire lay ahead.

Leading the way once again was Judy (Presidento) Barrett. Playing against a tough competitor who got a hole in one the week before, she wasn’t to be deterred. Judy was on fire throughout the front 9 taking the turn at 4 up. Her opponent started getting over the excitement of the previous week’s hole in one and started playing some great golf to pull the match back to square. Judy held on and dug deep, ending on the 18th all square.

Position 2 once again was Cathy (creator of all fines) Balafoutis. I’m surprised Cathy hasn’t had her fine jar out for this season as I’m pretty sure it would’ve been pretty full by this stage of the season, and able to fund a very swanky end of season party. However, she stayed focused on the job at hand and was 2 up after the front 9. Consistent all the way through, she held on to bring home the win 4&2.

Heidi Gregory was our number 3 this week. We’ve seen how focused our Heidi can get from the mixed pennants and she didn’t disappoint in this match. On fire is the only way to describe this one, coming home with a great win 5&3.

Lorna Foley was our number 4 again this week. Lorna’s always one to do a bit of wildlife whispering no matter which course she’s playing. However, she stayed in the game the whole way, despite the Geese in tow providing temptation, and opted to keep her camera in the bag to keep full focus on the task at hand. The geese ever so slightly taking Lorna’s eye earlier on the back 9, she managed to come in from behind to square the match on the 18th.

Cathy McDonald was again at position 5 this week. We’re all chomping at the bit to know what Gary did to fire her up this week – or was it the shocker she’d had the day before in the ladies stroke round (likely both) that got our Cathy M very fired up today. If any geese had been in her path, it may not have been pretty and Lorna the Wildlife Whisperer may have had something to say. But, Cathy M was clearly on a mission to get to the bar early, coming in with a very convincing win for the team 8&7.

Final result – The Coast 4 – Cronulla 1.

A fantastic result for the girls to secure their spot at the top of the table with 1 match to go.

This week, the girls have their final round at Kareela against Oak Point. This one may come to a countback for the winning spot so any game won will be a bonus.

All the best of luck for the girls this Friday.

Go Coasties!

Leanne Williams

Ladies Vice-Captain

Round 5 vs Beverley Park @ Hurstville

This week the girls ventured off to Hurstville to play against Beverley Park. The girls got there in plenty of time thanks to their captain telling them their tee off time was an hour earlier – sorry girls! But, plenty of practice time appeared to pay off! The forecast wasn’t good but thankfully, the rain mostly stayed at bay with only a few short downpours.

Leading the way this week again was Judy (Presidento) Barrett. She usually loves to be first cab off the rank but this week it proved a bit too testing. Judy fought hard to stay in the match but ended up going down 4&2.

Position 2 once again was Cathy (baker of Greek yummies) Balafoutis. The longer than normal warm up suited our Cathy this week. No amount of rain was stopping our field captain as she held the lead for the whole match and, despite the many shots given, still managed to come out with a win 2&1.

Karen Hand was our number 3 again this week. Karen dug as deep as she could, hanging in the match for as long as she could. With slippery clubs from the rain, she unfortunately went down 3&2.

Lorna Foley was our number 4 this week. Lorna was on fire and, with the Kookaburra’s on her side, she parred the first four holes to take a comfortable early lead. No amount of rain was going to deter our Lorna who played a consistent match with plenty a Kookaburra photo opportunity to be had. She came in with a win 3&1.

Cathy McDonald was at position 5 this week. Not sure what it was Gary said to her prior to this match – good or bad? – but from the start, she was on fire. On a mission to get out of the rain and in for a drink rather than returning to Garysitting duties, she proved too good for the opposition, bringing in the win 4&3.

Final result – The Coast 3 – Beverley Park 2.

This week’s win puts the girls at the top of the table with 2 matches remaining.

We wish the girls the best of luck this week as they play another tough one at Woolooware against Cronulla.

Go Coasties!

Leanne Williams

Ladies Vice-Captain

Round 4 vs Woolooware @ The Coast

This week the girls had their home game against Woolooware. In true Coast style, the weather didn’t disappoint with our home advantage and a strong ‘sea breeze’ hoping to prove too difficult for our competitors.

Leading the way this week was Judy (Presidento) Barrett. Judy’s never one to go down without a fight, battling it out for the full 18 but unfortunately going down at the last 1 down.

Position 2 once again was Cathy (Field Captain/queen/guru) Balafoutis. Completely oblivious to the strong winds and really not happy with last weeks loss, Cathy went out all guns blazing. Her opponent was on fire with her putting but this just fired Cathy up even more. With a lovely birdie on the 15th, choosing the wrong day for a pro pin win but most importantly bringing home the win for the Coast 4&3. I feel a pro pin coming on for our Cathy B very soon!

Karen Hand stepped in at number 3 this week and played a strong match against a fiery Irish competitor determined to make her home country proud for St Patrick’s day. She had the luck of the Irish on her side and struck a lucky bounce on the 17th from goodness knows where to land on the green. Too much Irish luck for this match giving Woolooware the win 2&1.

Cathy McDonald was at position 4 again this week. Bringing her Garysitting duties to the course this time with some extra support from the man himself. From the get-go, it was clear she was in for a tough match, but even the oppositions word of her home putting green wasn’t enough ‘talk’ to deter Cathy McD. The added support from Gary clearly paying off with the win going to The Coast 3&2.

In position 5 again was Shona (the machine) Choy. Just another day at The Coast in the ‘sea breeze’ for our Shona this week. Steak Sandwich in the waiting, Shona didn’t want to take too long out on the course this week, bringing the home win 3&1.

The girls are currently tied with Beverley Park at the top of the table with 3 matches to play. With their next match not until 28 March, they get a bit of well-deserved rest before the tail end commences.

Next match won’t be an easy one against Cronulla at Hurstville.

A big thank you to our helpers with spotting and all the other bits and bobs…. Deb McDermott, Tish Curtis, Margaret Grundy, Julie and David Quigg. And also not forgetting the yummy home baked Greek goodies from Cathy B!

Great result and well played Coasties!

Round 3 vs Camden Lakeside @ Lakeside

For round 3 the girls ventured off with an early start in the dark to Lakeside where they knew a tough match awaited against the home team. Thankfully the weather held out, despite the forecast, and all matches were played in what ended up being almost perfect golf weather.

In position one this week was Judy (Presidento) Barrett. Despite her consistent game, the greens played a significant advantage to the home side. Doing her best to dig deep, unfortunately the home team came up with the goods. Lakeside winning 8&7.

Position 2, Cathy (Field Captain/queen/guru) Balafoutis did well to leave so early this morning after her big day playing in the mixed pennants the day before. No excuses for our Cathy though as she did her utmost to get the job done. Sadly, the undulating greens were favouring the home side with Cathy B’s game ending in a 6&5 loss.

Our number 3, Lorna Foley, ever the fighter, was missing the trees this week but again had to put up with the home advantage on the tricky greens. Our 3rd loss for the day – 6&5.

Cathy McDonald was at position 4 this week. Cathy was determined to stay away as long as possible from those Garysitting duties taking her game all the way to the 18th. Being one down after the 17th, she fought hard on the 18th to bring in a draw, unfortunately ending with a final result with the home team winning 1 up.

In position 5 again was Shona (the machine) Choy. Always in the lead throughout the match, Shona managed to hold off a comeback to bring home the win for The Coast 2&1.

They say things usually happen in 3’s but, in this case it was 4 – a final result going the home teams way with Lakeside winning 4-1.

On Monday the tables are turned with the girls having their home game against Woolooware.

GO THE COAST!

Leanne Williams

Ladies Vice-Captain

Round 2 vs Hurstville @ Beverley Park

Our second match last Friday saw the girls off to Beverley Park to (shop… and) play golf against Hurstville.

A very hot day for the team which saw them utilizing the trees on the course a little more often than necessary for a bit of shade……

In position one again this week was Cathy (Field Captain/queen/guru) Balafoutis. Cathy played a solid game, holding off a comeback from her opponent, winning 3&2.

Position 2, Lorna Foley. Lorna’s first game for the B1 team, she was down 3 but managed to pull it back to have a 2 shot lead after the 9th. Ever the fighter is our Lorna, maintaining her lead, trimming trees but bringing home the win – 2&1.

Our number 3, Cathy McDonald wanting as much relief from her Garysitting duties as possible, took her match all the way. She got her monies worth, perhaps in more ways than she would like…… never leading the entire match, also trimming trees, but still managing to come in with a win on the 18th – 1 up.

Marisa Duggan played in position 4 this week. Marisa was up 4 but with no shade from tree trimming it made for a tough game in the heat of the fairway on the back 9. Marisa dug deep in the heat but couldn’t quite close it out going down at the 18th.

In position 5 was Shona Choy the machine, having to give a lot of shots to her opponent this week. Not much phases our Shona, coming in to win her match 2&1.

A 4/1 winning Round 2 for the girls. A great result!

Next Monday, the girls are at Lakeside with what will be a tough match against the home team. Best of luck girls!!

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-8233" GA 18.0 to 31.0.

The season runs over 7 weeks, commencing on 21 February with the last game being held on 11 April.

Our first match last Friday saw the girls venture to Cronulla to play against Kareela.

The team arrived at Cronulla with the sun shining, only for the weather to turn towards the end of the rounds, getting worse thereafter.

In position one was Cathy Balafoutis (Field Captain/queen/guru). Cathy came out with all guns blazing and managed to hold onto her game winning 2&1.

Position 2, saw one of our newer members, Karen Hand, representing The Coast against a very strong opponent. She fought well to stay in the game but unfortunately went down 4&3.

Cathy McDonald had some relief from Garysitting duties playing in position 3 for this week. She meant business this week and was able to close out her match 2&1 – just before the heavens opened.

A newby to the team is Marisa Duggan who played in position 4. With fighting grit, Marisa was determined to get her monies worth taking her match all the way. Unfortunately, she couldn’t quite close it out going down at the 18th.

Shona Choy was our number 5 this week. Being the demon she is, Shona saw the rain approaching and decided it was best to close her match out nice and early, taking a 6&5 win, preferring to opt for the shelter of the clubhouse.

So the girls wrapped up a week one win 3/2 – a great start to the season.

This Friday, we wish the girls the best of luck as they head to Beverley Park to play against Hurstville.

Leanne Williams

Ladies Vice-Captain

Final
