Ladies Silver Pennants – Round 1

The Ladies Silver Pennant team is made up of players whose handicaps are from GA 10.0+.

The season runs over 5 weeks, commencing on 2 May with the last game being held on 6 June.

Round 1 @ Cronulla vs Woolooware

The team arrived at Cronulla to rain, rain and more rain.  The course was reduced to 9 holes which had to be played twice.  From the previous week or so of rain, the course was extremely wet and finding relief from all the puddles was a game in itself.

Position 1 was Kerri Blyth (match play connoisseur).  Kerri was not planning on messing about for any longer than necessary, taking an early 4 shot lead after 4 holes.  She started to decelerate, squaring the next 6 holes but then took next to win the match 5&4.

Position 2, our newbie Liz Bamber.  Nice and steady for the first few holes, she got to 1 up after 14.  The pressure of the number ones watching from the sidelines and the lack wildlife to chat to adding too much pressure, Liz ended up 1 down with 3 holes to play.  All square after the 16th, she lost the 17th, having to win the 18th to square the match.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for our newbie, squaring the 18th to lose the match 1 down.

Carol Fukushima was Position 3 this week.  Carol hung in there for the entire match, remaining all square coming down the 18th.  Despite all the lakes in her path, she remembered to use her lock button on her buggy remote and made it to the 18th with everything intact.  Her opponents tee shot landed short of the green with Carol’s at the front of the green.  Her opponent first to hit, chipping onto the green pulling a gobbler out of the bag and into the hole for a nice birdie.  Carol’s long putt was a goodie, only just coming up short for a tidy par but unfortunately losing the hole and the match 1 down.

Position 4 was Cathy (baker of best Greek treats) Balafoutis.  Cathy sure has had more than her share of match play this season so we were expecting big things!  Her opponent being a member of both Woolooware and Cronulla meant a tough battle ahead.   Cathy was trying hard to miss the puddles, unintentionally opting for the trees which didn’t seem to work on this occasion.  A bit quiet was our Cathy, disappointed with her game, losing 5&4.

Number 5 this week – Carmel Fifield coming in at late notice to save the day, even when she knew what weather lay ahead.  Another Matchplay demon, Carmel played her game nice and steady and was 2 up with 3 to play.  Carmel bought it home with a win at the 18th – 2 up.

Final result – Woolooware 3 – The Coast 2.

For Round 2 the girls will have a bye since Kareela have unfortunately had to pull out of this year’s event due to lack of players.  The remaining teams are playing at The Coast on Monday 12th May.  Round 3 will be on 23rd May at Woolooware against Oak Point.
